Common Cast in New Terminator Movie, Has His Eyes on an Oscar

Sean "Diddy" Combs - who recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - isn't the only man from the rap world with lofty tinseltown dreams. Rapper Common is also emerging as one to watch, and was recently cast in the fourth installment of the blockbuster "Terminator" series.

“I'm not a hip-hop dude who wants to act. I'm an artist," Common recently told the Chicago-Sun Times.<--more-->The Chicago native added that he has hopes for an Academy Award.

"The Oscar seems very prestigious,” he said. “With all due respect to the Grammys, there are more music categories and it's easier to get a ticket to the show. Also if you look at it as someone coming from Chicago, there are only so many black artists who receive Oscars."

Common's Oscar dreams may seem a stretch for the relatively new actor, but his participation in the popular "Terminator" franchise bodes well for the goal. The second installment of the series "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" was released in 1991 and earned four Academy Awards.

Born Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Common has a co-starring role in "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," which is being produced by Halcyon Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. and Sony. In the movie, a matured John Conner, played by Christian Bale, continues to lead the human race in a battle against the machines. The rapper plays a freedom fighter.

Others starring in the movie include Sam Worthington, Derek Anderson, Jeanne Allgood, Dan Lin, Mortiz Borman, Victor Kubicek, and Jeff Silver among others.

"Terminator Salvation" is schedule for release in May 2009.

Common's latest album Invincible Summer is due in stores this summer.
