Oprah Winfrey Cancels 'Big Give' Charity Show
Posted May 15, 2008
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has reportedly decided to discontinue her charity spectacular "Oprah's Big Give." The show, which recently completed its first season on ABC, invited 10 members of the public to battle over who could find the best and most unusual ways to raise money for a selection of good causes.
In its first season the show generated millions of dollars for charity, and featured celebrity guest appearances from the likes of Jennifer Aniston and John Travolta.
Though ABC was eager to do a second season, Winfrey refused to continue the program. Network exec Steven McPherson tells the New York Post, "We loved that show and absolutely would have loved to bring it back. But it was something Oprah didn't want to do."
Winfrey's production company Harpo was involved in a lawsuit recently, which charged that the idea for the show was stolen from a fan who had submitted the idea to show producers. The woman's case was dismissed.
