Despite additional attempts by the defense to delay the trial, yesterday R&B superstar R. Kelly finally began his trial for child pornography charges stemming from the infamous sex tape, which allegedly shows the singer engaging in sex acts with a girl of about 13 years.
Of 16 possible jurors questioned three were chosen: one black man, one white man, and one black woman. According to MTV, among those dismissed was a man who felt that Kelly has been treated unfairly by the justice system, another who felt that sexual consent laws were "ludcrious," and yet another who learned everything he know about the case from a skit on the "Dave Chappelle" show.
Usually, jury selection is completed in groups. In this case however, potential jurors were reportedly questioned one by one in a small back room.
Reports say Kelly himself seemed for the most part uninterested in the proceedings, only occasionally nodding and often holding a tissue to his face to ward off the smell from a nearby men's bathroom.
Nine jurors and four alternates remain to be selected for the trial.
