T.I. Banned from Atlanta-Area School Appearances
Posted April 24, 2008
Two Atlanta metro school districts have barred popular rapper T.I. from speaking at school assemblies. Due to a conviction on weapons charges, T.I. was sentence to 1,500 hours of community service, including speaking to youth groups about the dangers of guns and crime.
Ironically, it's that very conviction that is keeping the rapper from appearing at Cobb County's Pebblebrook High, which has a student population that has been plagued with gang activity and has experienced the recent death of a classmate.
T.I., real name Clifford Harris is "banned from all Cobb County schools," according to reports from local station WSB-TV. A district spokesman insists that the rapper is not outright banned, but officials feel the timing is wrong for the appearance.
Others, including active Gerald Rose of the New World Order organization, believe that Pebblebrook's troubles make the school the perfect candidate for an address from T.I. "He needs to come here and bring his message," Rose contends.
Fulton County school officials said T.I. is banned from their schools because of his conviction on the gun charges.
The rapper is scheduled to be sentenced in one year and must complete 1,000 of the 1,500 hours of community service while awaiting his sentence.
